Mother’s Day Garden.. the gift that keeps on giving!

Two years ago I traveled to North Carolina to sell our lovely wooden toys. I knew Mike and my boys were up to something that weekend; usually I get a few calls a day while in transit but this time it was radio silence. When I finally got a call to check in, I heard a lot of “Shhhh, giggle, giggle, don’t tell her”. I had tears in my eyes when I pulled into the driveway and saw my lovely garden. What a special Mother’s Day gift! The boys used their garden tools to help put in trees and flowers. They learned about trees, flowers and about taking care of the beautiful nature around us. Plus, the boys were so proud of their hard work. Each year the garden blooms, each year the Weeping Cherry Tree gets a little but taller. Each year on Mother’s Day the boys add a few new flowers just to make mom smile. My garden truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

Today we’re walking on the wild side & loving it! Those of you who own these “wild” wooden animals (http://www.pureplaykids.com/animals/) know exactly what we’re talking about! Wooden animals make wonderful playthings; after all, kids are innately fascinated with animals large and small. Wooden toy animals are durable, and they play well with other toys (blocks, dolls, vehicles, etc.). They make wonderful room decor when not in play. Importantly, wooden animal toys awaken creativity in children as they provide sounds, movement, and stories. We love to recreate trips to farms, nature centers, zoos, hayrides and hikes with wooden animals. Add fences, blocks or vehicles for even more fun!

More Fun With Natural Easter Egg Dye Kit

Got some left over dye after you finish up with your Natural Easter Egg Dye Kit? How about making some ice eggs? This week we had fun learning about ice, temperature and colors when we made colored ice balloons, or “ice eggs” as little creators like to call them. Don’t forget to put dye in the balloon before you fill them. Works with food coloring or natural dyes in our Natural Easter Egg Dye Kit. Put them in a container in the freezer to avoid freezer mess. Once the ice eggs are frozen, crab a few bowls of lukewarm water and learn about mixing primary colors to make secondary colors.

Looking for EGG-CELLENT FUN? Grab some wooden eggs and join in the fun! The wood egg-spoon race is one of our favorites. (Ping pong balls, golf balls, wood balls all work well; real eggs can be a bit messy indoors!:) We also love 1) Impromptu egg hunts inside or outside! Hide the eggs. Give each kid a bowl and turn them loose, 2) Building “chicken coops” with blocks. Place the eggs inside it. Make 6 “chicks” from fluffy pom-poms as a craft project. Sometimes those sneaky chicks “hatch” when the kids are napping. They hide ALL over the house and the kids need to find them:) 3) Pretend Farmer’s Markets! We get to use our counting skills, and all kids love to play market.
